This volume brings together a series of studies aimed at analyzing the presence of African lexical items in Latin American varieties of Iberoromance languages on both sides of the Uruguayan-Brazilian border. The first chapter introduces the historical perspective and the following articles present results from the linguistic research conducted by the participants of the international research project Afro-Latin Linguistics: language contact in intercultural settings. The two editors, Laura Álvarez López and Magdalena Coll, are also coordinator and co-coordinator of the project. The general aim of this research group is to increase the current knowledge about intercultural encounters and their impact on the dynamics of language and culture by studying language change in socio-cultural contexts where speakers of Spanish, Portuguese and African languages have lived side by side.
