The contributions in this book were presented in a special symposium focusing on the fate and transport of heavy metals in the vadose zone as part of the Fourth International Conference on the Biogeochemistry of Trace Elements, held in Berkeley, California in June of 1997. This was one of a series of international conferences held to explore the emerging issues of the biogeochemistry of heavy metals in the environment.
