The story begins as Oliver Twist is born and immediately becomes an orphan, destined to grow up in the workhouse. Life is hard for Oliver. When he draws the short straw with the other boys and asks for more food, Oliver is taken from the workhouse to work as an apprentice undertaker. Unfortunately the undertaker’s other apprentice takes exception to him, and goads Oliver into a fight. Oliver is locked in the basement and decides his only option is to run away to London. Children will discuss what conditions were like in Victorian workhouses and explore Oliver’s character – suggesting words to describe him, and giving reasons for their choices.
