Marja Baeten is a jack-of-many-trades. She started her career at Malmberg Publishing as an editor of the educative magazines Okki and Taptoe. As a freelance copywriter she worked for, among other things, the popular Dutch TV programs Sesame Street and Klokhuis; she wrote short stories that later became picture books, and she wrote various teaching methods for primary education. From 2000 Marja became an editor of the children’s magazines PIPPO and POMPOEN, and in 2005 she started developing a toddler magazine for the World Wildlife Fund called PipaPanda. The content of this magazine later became the source of inspiration for a series of compilations about wild animals. Gertie Jaquet was born in Egmond aan Zee. Now she lives and works in Amsterdam where she shares a studio space under the railway with colleagues. Gertie illustrates children’s books, picture books, and magazines, and she illustrated for the famous Dutch TV-program Sesame Street. Best known are the books about Hare. She also made a musical puppet show about it, named Carrot Cake, together with author Annemarie Bon. Gertie usually works with brushstrokes, pastels and colored pencils, but she also often uses stamps she cuts herself. She wrote the book Stempelen! about this passion."This was a really good book. One is even a retelling of a fable. The non fiction elements were perfect bite-sized bits of information. Exactly how elementary age children absorb facts. "Having several animal lovers for grandchildren, they will love learning about the wild animals of the Savannah. Each story reflects an baby animal and their parents. The stories are funny and informative. As I was reading the story of baby hippo question his appearance with his parents, I could hear both my granddaughters laugh at his antics. He worries that he has a big butt and no one will like him. That all changes when the big butt saves the day. "This is a great book. I mean it's all there in the title. A collection of stories of animals that live in the wild of the African Savannah ecosystem. Child friendly stories about animals and what problems they face existing in that world. Followed by short and sweet informative pieces filled with statistics and fun facts. Facts about Hippos, Leopards, Elephants and so much more. My children loved hearing about them all and will hopefully retain the information over several more reads.
