Using this Book to Promote Social and Emotional Development
Empathy: Children can focus on Fox’s feelings and gain a better understanding of how lonely and isolated one can feel when certain differences between friends become obstacles.
Patience: Fox is mostly patient while everyone hibernates, but curiosity wins out and Fox opens the parcels addressed to the other animals. Fox appreciates that it was wrong and apologises for doing so.
Morality: The book inspires discussions about why it is wrong to open other people’s mail and why it is important to be upfront and considerate when communicating with one’s friends.
Communication: The importance of communication is clear in this story; Fox’s lonely experience could have been avoided if fox’s friends had mentioned that they sleep through winter. They resolve this by apologising.
