It was a huge black galleon with billowing sails and golden portholes, out of which jutted huge cannons. At the back of the ship, looming out over open space, was a long silver plank. Sam grinned as he saw the white skull-and-rocket-flares flag flying from the topmost mast. Space pirates! The space-pirate ship was now close enough for Sam to hear it flying low over the lab. Sam watched through the window as it travelled over to the other side of the planet, where laser beams were criss-crossing in the sky. Fireworks flared here and there, and if Sam concentrated hard enough he could just about hear the noise of fighting and the raucous singing of popular space shanties. From a young age, Benji was invariably to be found drawing and painting at the kitchen table, a scene which is often repeated to this day. He is the illustrator of the incredibly successful Bizzy Bear titles, which have been published in 23 languages, and has written a number of recent picture books, including The Storm Whale and Grandad's Island. He is the winner of the inaugural Oscar's First Book Prize 2014 and the Sainsbury's Children's Book Award 2015. Benji lives in east London with his wife and young daughter.
