Astonishing real-life rescue missions from on, under and above the earth from the award-winning team behind Survivors and Heroes.

How far would you go to save a life? Scrambling from the wreckage of his school after an earthquake, a nine-year-old Sichuan boy rescued two unconscious friends. 'I was hall monitor,' he said afterwards. 'It is my job to look after my classmates.'

Whether dragging a friend from a blazing car, masterminding a search far below the earth's surface, or recovering astronauts from an aborted space mission, Rescue reveals the ingenuity, courage and doggedness of the human spirit all over the world.

Another unputdownable collection of eye-opening and moving true adventures, both contemporary and historical. Impeccably told by David Long and brought to vibrant life by illustrator Kerry Hyndman.

Writer and historian David Long is the award-winning and bestselling author of the acclaimed Survivors series, Pirates Magnified, We are the Romans, The World's Most Magnificent Machines, Tragedy at Sea, The Story of the London Underground and more than twenty other non-fiction books on a wide range of historical subjects. He is married to Rosy and lives in Suffolk.

David says: I wrote to a few of my favourite authors when I was at school. I was genuinely delighted when they wrote back to answer my questions. I didn't collect autographs or anything like that but I loved finding out more about the books I most enjoyed. I think I probably imagined they would find the letters tiresome, or that they wouldn't want to be interrupted, but most seemed to enjoy hearing from their readers. I know I do. It is one of the things I like most about being a children's author, and engaging with readers in this way is a constant delight.

Kerry Hyndman is a London based illustrator and map maker with a wide range of editorial, advertising and publishing clients. In her spare time she likes to snowboard, climb, hit things with rackets and cycle around.
