Board books are geared toward our youngest readers. But, don't be fooled by appearances. This book that takes its readers from the Apollo Theater to Zabar's is one that can build the background knowledge of any aged reader. For example, the letter I is for indigenous people. You may wonder what people are indigenous to New York City? A simple search on the internet reveals that the Lenape are the people in question and there currently are 100,000 residents of New York City who descend from the Lenape. Neighborhoods abound in the form of Harlem, Chinatown, Koreatown, Little Italy, and the Village. Architectural marvels such as the Empire State Building, the Oculus, and Rockefeller Center are found inside this colorful book that celebrates our nations biggest and most famous city. Young children will delight in the illustrations that feature both multicultural adults and children. Older children may have their interests piqued wondering who is Derek Jeter or what is Wall Street. There is much to learned by reading what is seemingly a simple board book. A must read for any family who is planning a visit to the Big Apple.
