Adam Tiller visits Dark Cove every year. Only the legend of an evil mermaid who haunts the bay makes this sleepy fishing village interesting. Adam sets out to make a hoax video of her. But other forces are at work in the village and the mermaid might be the least of Adam's problems. After all, she's just a legend, and legends aren't real. Are they?Papercuts is an eerie and haunting series written to appeal to students aged 13+ who find full-length novels overwhelming. All titles have an accessible word count of 5000-6000. Written by respected and accomplished authors, they are packed with horror and elements of the supernatural. But be warned, they're not for the faint-hearted!This hi-lo series for struggling and reluctant readers has been written for children aged 13+, whose current reading age is between 8 and 9 years. Jon Mayhew is the multi-award-winning author of numerous children's books. His spine-chilling Mortlock trilogy was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's Book of 2010 and he is also the author of the Monster Odyssey series, which involves many, many giant sea beasts, pirates and weird inventions set in a real historical world. Deathmire was Jon's first quick read and compliments the spooky Victorian world of Mortlock. Jon has written several quick reads for Badger Learning, including Death Road and its sequel, Death Wheels for their popular Teen Reads series, Have a Go from their YA Reads and, most recently, Dark Tide from their much-anticipated second series of Papercuts. He is also the author of several primary reading scheme books including retellings of adventures from the Odyssey and Macbeth. He lives on the Wirral with his wife, four children, two dogs, five chickens and his mandolin, which he plays quite badly. Describing himself as a "recovering English teacher", Jon worked in education for 25 years before becoming a full-time author. He is passionate about literacy education and inclusion and spends a lot of time in schools across the land delivering writing workshops and talks.
