A colourful autobiography. Peter Horn describes being raised in a small Yorkshire village, unrecognisable today, where horses and carts, and pigs in the public bar were normal. However, Peter was growing up in a country at the tail end of its Empire, and in a part of the country where opportunity was limited to the soon to be declining industries of the woollen mills and farming.
Peter seized the opportunity of casting his net wider, to see and experience other cultures. travelling the world with the British Army, to places as far flung and varied as Brunei, Libya and Northern Ireland.
Later years are sadly characterised by the toll of age, both in the author and loved ones with his true account of coping and managing the cruel progression of dementia and the impact this had on him and his family and so his story needed to end with a first-person polemic on the treatment of older adults in the UK within the care system, and more specifically his beloved wife, Moira. True to his word and his vows, through sickness and in health and faced with many challenges with the social care systems, he promised Moira he would never leave her side and care for her right to the very end, and that he honoured with humour, dignity and respect.
