'The First World War happened over one hundred years ago but its effects are still to be seen in many other, often unobtrusive, ways in both the College and the University. Peter Martland’s moving commemoration of those who died, and those who also served, gives that legacy immediacy and vividness, transporting us to a College and a society very different from our own.' Sir Hew Strachan
'The College owes a debt of gratitude to Peter Martland (and also to Hew Strachan for his impressive and informative Foreword) for the astonishingly detailed research that he has carried out and assembled in this book. Through it we can read an extraordinary collection of moving stories of courage and devotion to duty by men of Corpus, most of whose lives were cruelly cut short by this devastating war. I’m sure I join many others in thanking and congratulating Peter for his thorough and well-presented work.' Stuart Laing, former Master, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge (m.1967)

A biography on the lives of those members of the College of Corpus Christi and of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Cambridge who died undertaking military service during the First World War, 1914 to 1919. Using a wide range of sources and images this work provides a case study of the First World War as it impacted on the lives of the then current and former members of Corpus Christi College, a small and ancient institution within the University of Cambridge. Not only does this book chronicle the lives of those Corpus men who were killed during the conflict and its aftermath (where possible using their own words or those who knew them, supplemented by images from their time at the College), it also tracks the lives of all the alumni known to have served in the British and imperial armed forces. In this unique manner this work tells the story of those lost generations who during that murderous conflict were confronted with what proved the ultimate test: a test that shook to its very foundations not just institutions like Corpus Christi College but the whole of British society.
