Mario Vargas Llosa was born in Peru in 1936. He is the author of some of the last half-century's most important novels, including The War of the End of the World, The Feast of the Goat, Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter and Conversation in the Cathedral. In 2010 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Gregory Kolovakos, was a translator of Latin American literature and director of the literature program of the New York State Council on the Arts. Kolovakos translated works by Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortazar, Jose Donoso and Mario Vargas Llosa. He lectured on translating at several colleges. He was a founder of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. Pantoja and the Special Service, with Gregory Kolovakos; Diamela Eltit, E. Luminata, Custody of the Eyes). He won the Kayden National Translation Award for Diamela Eltit's E. Luminata, ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Award for Ignacio Manuel Altamirano, El Zarco, The Bandit with the Blue Eyes), and the PEN Southwest Special Translation Award for Diamela Eltit, Infarct of the Soul.
