In the past decade, psychology has increasingly acknowledged the importance of considering the role of culture for understanding human development. One of the major issues now confronting those interested in this issue is how cultural meanings, values, and practices are appropriated by persons growing up and living in concrete contexts. The general theme addressed in this volume concerns how enactments of cultural understandings in social interactions form the fabric of individual experience and the specificities of individual development.

The Advances in Applied Developmental Psychology series was inaugurated to complement the Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology by providing an extended context in which to report on current research in applied developmental psychology. The mission of the Series is to present the behavioral and social science communities in-depth discussions of current issues facing professionals engaged in the application of behavioral knowledge to the real-life arenas in which they are engaged. The volumes may be single author or edited volumes, describing programs of research that have demonstrated value or propose new directions. Volumes have already addressed an array of areas such as preschool education, language and communication, parent education, and community education, among others.
