The book provides an analysis of impacts of climate change on water for agriculture, and the adaptation strategies in water management to deal with these impacts. Chapters include an assessment at global level, with details on impacts in various countries. Adaptation measures including groundwater management, water storage, small and large scale irrigation to support agriculture and aquaculture are presented. Agricultural implications of sea level rise, as a subsequent impact of climate change, are also examined.

Climate change impacts on water resources through changes in precipitation, snowfall, soil moisture, river flow and groundwater recharge. With agriculture the largest global water consumer, it is easy to see that the effects of climate change on agricultural production will be both significant and wide-ranging. This book provides an analysis of climate change impacts on water for agriculture, and the adaptation strategies needed to deal with these impacts. Adaptation measures including groundwater management, water storage and irrigation are presented, with chapters including assessment at global level and on impacts in specific countries. Covering the implications of sea level rise for agriculture, it also considers the social vulnerability to climate change among farmers at different scales, the linking of climate change with policy, and the results of water management on greenhouse gas emissions as an effort towards climate change mitigation. Using case studies from developing countries, this book provides a vital and up-to-date resource for agriculture and irrigation researchers and policy makers.

He holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences from the International Institute for Aerospace and Earth Sciences (ITC) and Wageningen University in the Netherlands. He has over 30 years of experience in research and management with varied subjects in water resources and agriculture planning, including hydraulic and water quality modelling, crop modelling, land use optimization, and assessment of climate change impacts in many countries as India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Philippines, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Particularly he contributed to several studies in the deltas, including land use policies, tradeoffs between rice and shrimp production systems, and water management in the Mekong and Ganges Deltas. He is author, co-author or editor of over 30 refereed journal articles, book chapters or books, and over 100 technical reports and papers in conference proceedings.
