An "intermediate" level book and published in collaboration with Dorling Kindersley (DK) to combine the author's instruction with DK's high-interest visuals and design, Reading for Life puts reading in the context of real life to engage students in their learning. Reading for Life is shaped by two research-based assumptions: students are most engaged when the material is revelant to their lives and students are most successful when they are active learners. To support the first premise, author Corrine Fennessy brings a career topic into focus for each chapter and uses carefully chosen "real-world" reading selections so that students can start to think about possible careers, set goals, and recognize the relevance of reading to their everyday lives. For the latter principle, Fennessy engages students in activities-based learning in order to help students master key reading skills. Students learn by doing, not by reading extensively about how to do something. The end result is students' mastery of key reading skills and strategies while discovering connections among readings, themselves, and everyday life.

Reading . . . in real life. Students read/practice with authentic, real life materials that they will encounter in college, work, and life.
“Real-Life Reading” selections (e.g., credit card agreements, drug testing consent forms, etc.) demonstrate how mastering reading skills will help them in their everyday lives.
Each chapter focuses on a specific career (with career-related examples, practice, and reading selections) to introduce different career paths and motivate students. Careers include those in hospitality, technology, and law enforcement.
The “On the Job Interview” boxes show students real people who have accomplished their goals - achieved fulfilling careers - and how they achieved them.
The “Textbook Selection” and “Textbook Graphic Aids” sections in each chapter prepare students for future textbook-reading assignments.
Activity-based learning. Rather than passively reading and responding, students are actively participating in their learning through applications, predictions, and activities.
“What Do You Already Know” questions begin each reading selection so that students can connect their prior knowledge with the reading topic, a critical skill for any reader.
“U-Review” activities provide immediate practice after instructional pieces to reinforce and deepen their comprehnesion and ensure that students have mastered key concepts before moving forward.
A variety of activities and games are included in each chapter to further engage students in active and collaborative learning and to give them an opportunity to talk through their learning processes and learn from each other. This also benefits students who have an auditory learning style, who learn better from listening and speaking.
Each chapter closes with a Study Skills section to help students become more effective in their note taking, test taking, paraphrasing, etc.
The unrivaled DK design makes concepts and processes visible and enjoying to students.
Each topic is presented in self-contained, two-page spreads for at-a-glance referencing.
Explanations are concise and “chunked” to be more approachable and appealing for today’s readers.
