The marburgviruses and ebolaviruses are among the most hazardous pathogens known to mankind. Since these agents are highly virulent, research progress has been rather slow in comparison to other viruses. After it was revealed that the former Soviet Union has evaluated filoviruses for biological weapons development interest in defenses against them has been reawakened.
