Extracorporeal therapy has become such a mainstay of modern medical practice that its apparent simplicity overshadows the complex events that result from the interface of blood with artificial surfaces. While both ex vivo and in vitro testing of the efficiency and biocompatibility of dialysis membranes are steadily on the increase, there is surprisingly little information available about the effect of dialysis membranes on morbidity and mortality. This volume provides up-to-date information on the various dialysis membranes currently in use and also examines the controversial issues that have arisen. The contributions, authored by respected specialists in the field, are organized into sections focusing on membrane classification, membrane evaluation, biological interaction and clinical results. Clearing away misleading assumptions, the book indicates what new and established membranes can and cannot achieve. It is intended for medical professionals working with dialysis and researchers involved with the industrial development of these membranes.
