Control Theory in Biomedical Engineering: Applications in Physiology and Medical Robotics highlights the importance of control theory and feedback control in our lives and explains how this theory is central to future medical developments. Control theory is fundamental for understanding feedback paths in physiological systems (endocrine system, immune system, neurological system) and a concept for building artificial organs. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers in the control engineering and biomedical engineering fields, and medical students and practitioners seeking to enhance their understanding of physiological processes, medical robotics (legs, hands, knees), and controlling artificial devices (pacemakers, insulin injection devices). Control theory profoundly impacts the everyday lives of a large part of the human population including the disabled and the elderly who use assistive and rehabilitation robots for improving the quality of their lives and increasing their independence.

Olfa Boubaker received her PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from the National Engineering School of Tunis (ENIT) and Habilitation Universitaire degree in Control Engineering from the National Engineering School of Sfax (ENIS), in Tunisia. She is currently a full professor at the National Institute of Applied Science and Technology (INSAT) of University of Carthage where she is actively engaged in teaching and research in control theory, nonlinear systems, and robotics. Professor Boubaker has participated in several research projects in sustainable development areas including the fields of medical robotics, green energy, water preservation, and environment protection. She has supervised 9 theses and 18 Master dissertations and mentored more than 50 engineer graduated projects in the industry. She is an associate editor of the International Journal of Advanced Robotic Systems (SAGE publishing), guest editor for the journals Complexity and Mathematical Problems in Engineering (Hindawi Publishing) and regional editor of the book series Emerging Methodologies and Applications in Modelling, Identification and Control (Elsevier Publishing). She also serves as scientific committee member in several international and peer-reviewed conferences. Professor Boubaker is the principal author of seven books, editor of six special issues, and the author/co-author of more than 150 peer-reviewed papers.
