Alvin Levin (b. 1914, Paterson, NJ) studied at City College and Brooklyn Law School. Courted by The New Yorker, New Directions and others, Levin mysteriously disappeared. He died in 1982. JAMES REIDEL is a poet, translator, editor, and biographer. Pulitzer Prize–winning poet John Ashbery (1927—2017) translated many French writers, including Alfred Jarry, Pierre Reverdy, and Raymond Roussel. In 2011 he was awarded the National Book Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
The stories are all told by and “outsider artist”, a writer who is never able to finish his long novel yet easily writes these small touching portraits about the poor who, in their dance halls and bars, long to live the high-life of the Park Avenue “swells.” in dance halls, and bars.
