Hiroyuki Itsuki is a novelist, essayist, critic, songwriter and composer from Yame, Fukuoka Prefecture. He is the winner of the 1966 Shosetsu Gendai Prize for New Writers for âSaraba Mosukuwa gurentaiâ (âFarewell to Moscow Misfitsâ), the 1967 Noaki Prize for âAozameta uma wo mivoâ (âSee the Paled Horseâ), the 1976 Yoshikawa Eiji Prize for Literature for âSeishun no mon, Chikuho-henâ (âThe Gate of Youth: Chikuhoâ) and the 2002 Kikuchi Kan Prize.Â
Meredith McKinney is an award-winning translator whose previous translations include âThe Pillow Book, âSoseki Natsumeâs âKusamakuraâ and âKoroko,â Yoshikichi Furuiâs âRavine and Other Stories,â for which she won the JapanâUS Friendship Commission Translation Award in 2000, and work by Seiko Tanabe and Masahiko Shimada.Â
