Brad Smith is Professor and Chair of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Wayne State University.Police and Society is well established, well written, accessible to students, and covers many of the issues I find important in this course. The content is current and focused on the legal and organizational issues that structure and constrain the challenges we see in policing. It is probably as good as any text I've used in 20-plus years of teaching this class. I've looked at other texts, but none were better suited to my approach.
