This report has been commissioned by the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg, Germany, and is an element in the research project Honour and Criminal Law. The Institute's objective with this project is to undertake a comparative study of how honour is protected under criminal law in various legal systems. Among the focal issues in the report we can mention: What characterizes honour as a legal interest and how is it linked to related legal interests? Who is protected against defamations, what constitutes a defamation, and what circumstances can justify the making of defamatory statements? What sanctions can be applied in cases of defamation, and what significance is attributed to honour in sentencing? And finally, what protection is accorded to honour through procedural rules? Bjørnar Borvik is a Research Fellow at the Faculty of Law, University of Bergen.
