There are now close to 200 million severely- or moderately disabled people in developing countries and only 1% receive effective rehabilitation. This book introduces the concept and experience of community-based rehabilitation (CBR), an effective and less costly system than conventional methods. Large efforts are needed to improve access to services and provide more equitable opportunities and governments need to take responsibility for providing the backbone of CBR, with the ultimate objective of meeting the essential requirements of disabled people in their own country.
