The export performance of India's industries has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years. This book reaches a different conclusion from most others in suggesting that large generalizations are unhelpful in understanding this problem. What is needed, according to Kumar, is a examination of the factors which are specific to a particular industry, and which determine its export performance. The author selects a small sample of three manufacturing industries; those engaged in the making of clothing, bicycles and parts, and heavy eletrical equipment, to examine the structure and characteristics of each in great detail. Kumar also offers a new analytical frameowrk with which to conduct future research in this area.
