Although McGrath is not in the narrow sense a biblical scholar, it [the handbook] well expresses its author's overriding concern to commend the faith of the Bible ... The application of 61 passages is discussed in blocks set off from the main text ... These comments could provide useful starting- points for group discussions ... The handbook includes three introductory articles, admirably clear maps and other readers' help.

- Rev. Dr. Paul Ellingworth, The Methodist Recorder

McGrath's handbook is more about the communication of his gigantic knowledge into accessible helpful ways.

The more I read this handbook, the more impressed I was. . . [It is] well laid out, making it easy to use. Although the commentaries are rather brief they are nonetheless interesting.
