This book is an example of the truly visionary in theology, a book where scholarly and pastoral insight into the biblical text are one and the same. The very best theology seamlessly provides the reader with intellectual and spiritual profit, and Fr. Elizondo's book delivers admirably on both.

- John Cavadini, Chair of Theology, University of Notre Dame,

Elizondo masterfully weaves together moving personal stories and profound theological insights. In a style as dramatic as it is irresistible, Elizondo conveys the sheer extravagance of Christ's love and the radical character of Christ's witness.

- Robert Goizueta, President, Catholic Theological Society of America and Professor of Theology, Boston College,

A surprising reading of the gospels that helped me see the God in myself. It empowered me to understand how I too could work for unity and peace in these troubling times.

- Sandra Cisneros, author, The House on Mango Street,

By examining the most basic elements of the gospel narratives, Virgilio Elizondo expands the understanding of the journey for justice, dignity and acceptance. Women especially will find healing strength and courage in his insights into the humanity of Mary.

- Sister Maria Elena Gonzalez, President, Mexican American Cultural Center, Sister Maria Elena Gonzalez, President, Mexican American Cultural Center,

Maravilloso! It is Jesus up close and personal. I was unable to put the book down until I had read it all. As the center of gravity of Christianity is shifting to the periphery and the accent of theology moves to a more cultural exegesis, the reading of A God of Incredible Surprises makes the transition all the more exciting.

- Dr. Jesse Miranda, head of AMEN, the alliance of Hispanic Evangelical ministries,

Elizondo . . . opens our eyes to what it might have been like for Jesus and Mary and other Galileans of their time.

America: The Jesuit Review of Faith & Culture

Thought-provoking and occasionally provocative. Simply written with a powerful message.

Religious Studies Review

Father Elizondo does not finger-point but rather demonstrates how one can live the Christ-centered life.

- Brian T. Olszewski, Today's Catholic

Elizondo has produced a succinct personal testament to his life and thought.

National Catholic Reporter

This is a remarkable new work on Jesus...I recommend the book highly.

- William A. Barry, Book Review Digest
