Provides an unparalleled account of the multiple voices of Christian theology Through in-depth studies of representative figures and broad overviews of key movements, Ford’s The Modern Theologians explores Christian theology’s engagement with multiple ways of knowing across diverse approaches and traditions. Covering Christian theology from the early twentieth century to the present, this edition provides the next generation of theologians with the tools and concepts needed to take interdisciplinary conversations forward. Throughout the book, world-renowned theologians identify common dynamics found across theologies to enable comparisons of different geographical regions, trans-local movements, and ecclesial contexts. In-depth chapters explore the development and trajectory of modern theology and provide critical evaluation of topics such as Roman Catholic theology since Vatican II, Christianity’s relations to non-Christian religious traditions, and theories concerning human flourishing. Now in its fourth edition, Ford’s The Modern Theologians is fully updated to reflect the broad spectrum and core concerns of Christian theology in today’s interconnected world. The authors provide new insights into Christian theology’s conversations with other academic disciplines, emerging issues within theology in the global South, current challenges such as nationalism, secularism, the environmental crisis, and much more. With extensive references to further readings and research, Ford’s The Modern Theologians remains an invaluable resource for undergraduate and graduate students, academic researchers, clergy, teachers of religious studies, and general readers alike.
