Denigrated by some critics for its alleged low-brow commercialism and a perceived failure to take up the legacy of the New German Cinema of the 1970s, German film culture since unification nevertheless demonstrates both a high degree of diversity and a willingness to engage with key issues facing the newly formed Berlin Republic.
