An updated reissue of The Patron Saints of Gwent Churches, this well-researched book explores in detail the long list of church dedications in Gwent throughout the last 2000 years and reveals how many have changed over the centuries. Meet some long-forgotten Celtic Saints, as well as the more obvious later dedications. The book traces the influence of the Irish saints on the formation of Gwent communities and churches, as well as more local saints from the Celtic Church. Who now remembers St Felix or St Oswald? Or St Cwrrwg or St Ffwst? Chapters are devoted to the churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary, St Michael and St Teilo, as well as tracing the development of the cults of St Dyfrig, St Illtyd and St Gwynllyw. If you’ve ever wondered how some Gwent villages got their names, then this is the book for you. Deeply researched by original author and churchman, Dr Daryll Evans, the book has been brought up to date by his widow Christina and makes fascinating reading for anyone interested in the landscape and history of Gwent.
