The Norwegian Navy a Brief History is an overall presentation of the history of the Norwegian Navy from its origin in the Danish-Norwegian fleet during the Napoleonic wars to the present. It depicts how threat perceptions and political developments have translated into naval tasks, capabilities and organizational structure, and tells the story of dramatic events in war as well as of routine operations in prolonged periods of peace. The Norwegian Navy a Brief History is translated and adapted from a work by Bjørn Terjesen, Tom Kristiansen and Roald Gjelsten. Jacob Børresen (1943) is Commodore (R) Norwegian Navy with a background from service as a commander of submarines and frigates and as a planner and director of exercises and operations nationally and in NATO. He is the author of numerous books and publications on strategy, defence policy and security policy in Norwegian and international journals.
