The Bird of Dawning contains a rare Christmas text by William Shakespeare (Hamlet). This was first issued in 2015 as part of ten Shakespeare settings for mixed voices compiled and edited by Chilcott, but it is good now to have this piece available on its own.

Geoffrey Webber, Choir & Organ, September 2017

These pieces are all unaccompanied, gentle and dreamy with rich harmony. As one expects, Bob Chilcott has composed two attractive and accessible pieces that choirs will enjoy. The most straightforward, Mary's Child, is enhanced by the addition of an optional solo flute. Its folk-song-like melody is simply harmonized and matches the lovely poetry of Norman Nicholson. Shakespeare's Hamlet provides the text of The Bird of Dawning, set with soprano solo and divisions in each voice part.

Gordon Appleton, RSCM Sunday by Sunday, September 2017

for SATB (with divisions) unaccompanied This spellbinding setting of words from Act 1, Scene 1, of Hamlet depicts a bird of dawning singing all night long in celebration of the Saviour's birth, with Shakespeare's characteristically evocative imagery heightened by Chilcott's artful word-setting. The harmonies are rich and the atmosphere hushed and expectant, with asoaring soprano solo line, which may be taken by a soloist from within the choir, evoking the birdsong.
